Summary: Ideal combination
Comment: Circa-1992ish, I bought a Smith Corona laptop word processor, which was about twice a big, weighed twice as much and cost double what I paid for the 4G Surf. I loved that (comparatively) stupid machine -- no frills but useful as hell. My wife and I used it hard for about three years until it died.
Comparing an old word processor to the Asus eeePC series may seem derogatory, but let me assure you otherwise: this new sub-notebook a great tool, and to my mind, the 4G Surf version makes the best balance of available features and price.
Right from the box, IT IS THE KILLER PORTABLE WORD PROCESSOR!
I can carry the thing inside the memory foam sleeve Amazon sells while bicycling (fits in my fanny pack) and trek out for a quiet place to write. Battery life is adequate (I bought a new OEM spare on eBay for $45, but I've yet to need it); keyboard size is a perfect compromise -- I can touch-type with it, but any smaller and my mits wouldn't fit. The 7" screen is no hardship for typing text, even with my aging eyes. The lean Linux OS opens and closes fast when you punch the power button. And at $350 delivered, I can risk destroying my 4G Surf on the road because the cost of a replacement won't kill me.
If you think writing is just about using your thumbs on a phone, this may not seem so impressive, but I thank Asus for producing exactly what I've been waiting the last 15 years for.

Comment: It was between the Iphone and the Asus Surf and guess who won? The Asus Surf EeePC. Sure, for the internet, you have to tap into a network, but unlike the Iphone, I don't have to pay the $40 a month + subscription fee to have that priviledge since I use this mostly for travel and in airports who all seem to have a wireless connection. I didn't like the size of the IPhone keyboard either -- this is much better. The Iphone keyboard requires the touch of skin, not a finger nail (hey, I'm a woman) which made it impractical for me to use IPhone easily. On the Asus, I always get connected when a network is available and do almost anything on this great little machine. And...bye bye Windows! But its really easy to transfer the same documents back and forth. I love the flash drive feature in case I drop it! These shouldn't get damaged like a regular laptop always seems to (but I'm sure its not too good for it or the screen either.) Looks great too...I always get comments on it. A GREAT little machine and also has a Kindle-like Reader in it as well. Can't go wrong for the price!

Comment: cool, fun, multi-midea battery the weakest part of this product, has a lot of possibilty but for a little more money you could get a full linux laptop..think about it..the eee will never replace your laptop, it doesn't have the speed, the memory, but you can still have a lot of fun with it if you want to learn a new os, it does what they say it can but you have to configure it the way you are going to use it. the display is not the worlds best (not really hi def) but it can out put a really good video to a external monitor, to be truthful, it has a lot of capasity to be better but you will have to work at it, great multi media in puts out puts, almost as heavy as a laptop, if you are a multimedia freak you can have fun with this but don't expect it to replace your laptop or home pc (better idea, get a nokia 8oo or 770 or 810, or wait for divx LG Secret to be relased in usa, or get it transhipped, for fun and then buy an Imac for work and stability.(don't cry those of you who are fond lovers of all things "Bill Gates" you won't disappoint him by buying Imac, he ownes controlling interest in Apple but he is not CEO of eather. PS mirosoft office runs better on Imac than it does on mswindows nothing runs well on vista. have a great day...spend a lot of money.

Summary: Ultraportable laptop for under $400-great for students and travelers
Comment: I bought mine back in October. I waited for months for it to be released in the US, and I researched and read reviews from every possible source. I was tired of lugging around my Dell Inspiron laptop that weighed around 6.5 pounds. That plus books, makeup bag, and general things I carry every day made my bag way too heavy on days I had classes. And I really need to carry a laptop to classes. Without typed notes, forget about studying. I can't read my own writing. The Eee is super light--lighter than many books I have to read for classes. I almost immediately loaded XP on it, which created some problems of space, but I dumped a bunch of useless stuff, and the speed returned. There's no hard drive; it uses flash memory. I keep any nonessential programs on one flash drive, and all documents on a second flash drive. The Eee turns on and shuts off more quickly than my Dell ever did, even when it was new, which is very convenient in school. When I'm running Word and using the Internet, one class (2 hours) gets the battery down to 30%, but I try to sit near a plug whenever possible. I sometimes have problems when the Atheros and Windows programs fight for the wireless connection, so neither connects, but I can usually fix it. The tiny screen size is my biggest gripe. A good proportion of the screen space is taken by the speakers, a really dumb design idea. The new Eee 900 fixes this flaw for $149 more. Not enough of an issue for me to spend that much for a new one, but maybe a reason for someone to get the 900 over this one. Built-in webcam is great! I can fit the Eee in my purse and it's barely heavier than a paperback. Everyone who sees me using it has to come over for a look, even our IS people (Good way to meet people). My husband is a big guy and has large hands and he HATES the tiny keyboard. I don't have many problems typing (and I don't know how to touch-type), except I often hit the caps lock key. I love my Eee. For a gift, I would buy someone the Eee 900 with the larger view-screen.

Comment: I really like this computer.except for the battery life is very short! except for that this mini computer is top of the line in my book. It does all that it claims and more. if only the battery life was better I could have given it 5 stars instead of only 4. but I still love the compact, portabilities that it has and The price was very reasonable.So I would still recommend this mini computer to someone who needs portability as well as reliability.
